HPV (human papilloma virus) causes cervical cancer. Cervical cancer causes 3/4 million deaths each year worldwide (the second most important cancer in women). We heard a wonderful Grand Rounds yesterday by Sue Goldie from Harvard. She discussed the use of mathematical modeling to understand screening options for women.
Only certain strains of HPV cause cancer. There are over 50 strains known at this time. Her models show that HPV screening is more efficient than PAP smears. We will probably go to an HPV screening policy (at least starting after age 30) in the relatively near future. She did point out that vaccination would trump screening in the near future. Therefore, I was not surprised to hear yesterday afternoon that the first HPV vaccine trial was in today’s NEJM. Vaccine Appears to Prevent Cervical Cancer.
In a study of 2,392 young women, half of them vaccinated and half given placebo shots, the vaccine was 100 percent effective. Followed for 17 to 27 months, no vaccinated women developed infections or precancerous growths from the virus, whereas 41 nonvaccinated women did become infected, including 9 with precancerous cervical growths. A report on the study is being published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The investigators called this study a ‘proof of concept’ study. It only used the most important strain – HPV-16. Merck is now working on a vaccine against several strains.
One type of human papillomavirus, HPV-16, is most commonly linked with cancer; it is found in 50 percent of cervical cancers. Another type, HPV-18, causes 20 percent. Others cause the rest. Still other types of human papillomavirus cause noncancerous genital and anal warts in both men and women.
In trying to develop a vaccine, the researchers chose as their target HPV-16, the leading cause of cervical cancer. They made the vaccine by splicing a viral gene into yeast so that the yeast would produce a protein normally found in the outer shell of the virus. The protein, also called a virus-like particle, is the vaccine. It cannot cause infection, but it sparks the patient’s immune system to make antibodies that fight off HPV-16.
The vaccine that Merck is now testing, and hopes to market, will immunize patients against both HPV-16 and HPV-18, which together cause 70 percent of all cases of cervical cancer. The vaccine will also protect against two other HPV types, 6 and 11, which cause about 90 percent of genital warts.
The wart protection was included to “give incentive to young men to also take the vaccine,” Dr. Jansen said.
She explained: “Men don’t get cervical cancer. I always strongly felt that if we only go for cervical cancer types, there would be no reason for men to accept the vaccine. Even though they are vectors for transmitting the virus, they don’t usually have effects.”
These data portend a new route for prevention. Prevention almost always trumps screening.

Will the vaccine cure the ones who already have HPV? or just prevent those without it from getting it?
Will the vaccine cure the ones who already have HPV? or just prevent those without it from getting it?
As best I know, the vaccine will only prevent infection.
will there be a vaccine developed to prevent men from contracting HPV?
Well this seems to affect women very harshly by creating a high for risk cervical cancer, but it also cause genital warts for men. i was infected by a woman who was my first and due the warts and scaring probly my last. I don’t understand why this doctor thinks that I wouldn’t want the vaccice and I don’t see myself as vector but more a victim since she had no visisble signs. Maybe that statement is the essential reason the vaccine is not offered to men.
Also I had always used condoms but the never quite went all the way down the shaft, was that the source of infection or was it passed to be by oral sex?
They should work on a great cure for HPV.I have the diesess and it’s like a dake cloud that hangs over my head every day.I never thought it would happen to me,and I was sadly mistacken,I wish I could go back and chang all of it.At first I felt so durty, until I relized that I’m not alone I can talk to my friends about it,what I would love to tell them is that I’m cured,I don’t have to worry about it as much and that I’m fine now.So all you doctors out there, please don’t give up,because when you find a cure I will be the first one to get it,no matter what the cost!!!
Will the vaccine prevent other hpv like common warts and also when will it be available ?

When will this vaccine be available to all public?
i uknowingly infected someone i really love and now he hates me of course.i was his first partner on top of everything now he has a disease for life.i wish to god i would have known,i would have never did this to him.this disease has to be stopped,i hope to god they can find a cure because it ruins peoples lives.i have been severely depressed since finding out and now have to take medication.please be careful and condoms do not protect you from this either,we used them and it was still spread.
This is not a prison sentance for the premiscuous rather a mockery of the unkowing monogomous. Got HPV from an X-girlfriend with no signs of the infection. So far this has pretty much ruined my life. As a loyal trusting boyfriend I got this and have had stressful realtionships since. Scary to sometimes think that I may never have normal loving sex again. I have had this for 2 1/2 years and can’t get rid of this curse.
I hope that someone who is a scientist reads this. Please don’t give up on, or percrastinate developing a CURE for ALL hpv. I know I have the warts. But I can’t find out any other strains till after I have my child, and they take some tissue samples. I am scared for my child, and my life. Too many people have this, and we dont know it, and then like me we get pregnant, and put children at risk. If your not close to a CURE let the public know. If we have hope Please let us know, I search the net everyday for some new info besides, “there is no cure” so please let us victims know something?????????
I have had hpv for about ten years is anyone working on a vaccine to cure me?
I heve hpv and warts. I want to do therapeutic hpv vaccine to cure me?
I want to do therapeutic hpv vaccine.
You know..As I read through all of these posts, I feel inclined to point out the obvious..it’s not really all that bad.
Sure, from a social aspect, it sucks but all of this talk about it ruining lives is just too much.
I don’t know about you but if I had to pick one STD to have, I’d have to go with HPV. Sure beats the other options, doesn’t it?
I’ve seen stuff in journals recently about a possible cure, although it’s still years away but until then, do what you have to do, be safe and lighten up.
That is one goofy comment. HPV sucks. Everytime I see a girl I’m interested in I realize that to be with her is to endanger her. HPV is not a harmless STD. A bacterial STD is not a huge issue because it can be cured. Curing a virus could take a long long time.
Perk up people.
First, it’s not that bad; it’s fully treatable and not at all life threatening (assuming regular pap smears for women).
Second, it’s incredibly commong; most experts say that around 75% of sexually active people have had it at some point in some form over their lives.
Third, it’s not necessarily for life; in studies reported in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Assocation most women seemed to clear their HPV infections. (In the NEJM study, 70% did within a year, in the JAMA study, 90% did within three years.)
So, a couple years after your last symptom, you’re not that much more likely than a random (asymptomatic) person to have it. Sure, you *might* have it. Much of the anxiousness I see in the posts here seems to come from feelings of not wanting to spread this to someone else. And sure that?s a reason to be careful about sex.
But then, think about it this way: maybe you?ve cleared it, but whoever you’re looking at dating or sleeping with might very well have it, given the prevelance. Or they might have a different strain. So being careful with sex is about protecting yourself as well.
I know it?s hard to walk around with all this knowledge of mights and maybes and watching other people hook up without so much as thinking about it. Maybe it?s not as fun as a world without HPV (or STDs for that matter), but it might not be such a bad thing to be a little more care with sex and relationships. Responsibility can be pretty tough, but you?re worth it.
I dont see how you can just laugh this off. Every girl i have had sex with turns to mush. It is not love anymore it is insanity and i only wish i had aids so that i would die quickly. Rather then waiting for it day after day, alone.
i know that last comment from billy was a joke. no one in a right mind chooses hiv over hpv. three facts remain:
1. it’s so common that unless your a virgin, it’s likely you’ve been exposed.
2. it been LINKED to cervical cancer in women. it has NOT BEEN proven to CAUSE cervical cancer in women.
3. it has ALSO been LINKED to prostate cancer in men. this does not mean it CAUSES prostate cancer.
for all of you who are sad about being exposed to a carrier of the virus, it’s understandable. but this is not the end of anything, of great sex, and of having fun. just be careful.
you can basicly consider it normal to have it if ur sexually active, its not that big of a deal and ur body will pretty much get rid of it within a year. You should be more concerend getting and HIV infection
I picked up the virus somehow from a girl I never slept with. I guess it was just from touching, it’s that easy to get. I’ve had it for two years now and in the beginning, it WAS awful. My mind was filled with questions like how could I ever sleep with someone else? I’ve been lucky enough to have a girl that I’m deeply in love with though. She was a virgin when I first made love to her and she forgave me when she found out. So, now, I go day to day with it. I don’t think about it very often and it never disrupts my life.
Let me give you some info I’ve learned from studying the web when I first got this disease:
1) Do NOT let your doctor say that you can “ping pong” the virus back and forth with your partner. In clinical trials, this ping pong effect has shown no evidence correlation wise or causal that such a thing happens. This happens with viruses like Herpes. So, enjoy your sex life with your partner.
2) A vaccine AND a cure is in development. The cure is still in very early stages and may not be available for many years (think 10-20) but hey, it’s amazing we’re living now.. in this time and age when we HAVE hope of having it cured. Your parents never would be hoping for the vaccine to get finished. The medical journal has recently proposed nearly all diseases will be able to be eliminated in the next 70 years. Pretty cool…
3) I don’t know what I would do if I ever left my girlfriend to look for someone else. I suppose I would be much more careful with who I chose to make love to and look for someone I knew I could spend my life with.. something a portion of the population has always done. It ain’t that bad. OR you could be a careless selfish bastard and just spread it to everyone you possibly can. Learning to deal with warts just means understanding that (unless you’re that bastard) you’ll just have to pick sexual partners more carefully. Hopefully the vaccine will be available soon, it would make things MUCH more easier when finding someone to make love to.
For the posters on here who are looking to die because of this disease. Christ man. Relax. You’re alive, you still can do things ANYTHING you want to. Enjoy life, date that pretty or handsome guy or gal. Trust me too.. give it time. The longer you go with it the more you get used to it. I’m starting to see it more as a part of myself more than anything.
Good to see there’s some place to talk about it.
-Jason
My girlfriend has had cervical cancer. I found out that I have HPV. I’m the second person she has been with and I’m afraid that I have given her the virus. If she has the virus will it cause cervical cancer to reccur. Cervical cancer runs in her family because her aunt died of cervical cancer.
I’m glad that a vaccine is under development (I read in a medical journal within the next 2-3 years). We all just have to pray to God to give us strength everyday and to help us to get rid of this disease one way or another.
Is ther anyway that I could sign up for the study of the vaccine and does the vaccine help if you alreadly have the virus?
Hello all.
I am a male carrier. I just learned that a year ago. I had never even heard of the virus before. I had lesions (and still do) but didn’t know about them since they are rather tiny.
I have known two females with the virus; one whom it seems I unknowingly infected a few years ago and one who contracted the virus from another source.
The former developed pre-cancerous cervical cells and needed sereval treatments to arrest the development. The latter lady’s immune system, so her gynocologist claimed, defeated the virus through its own might.
Consider that the one had psychological disorder and was frequently very depressed. Frequently she was starving herself, not getting adequate sleep (weakening her immue system) and engaging in permiscuity.
The other lady engaged in regular spiritual and physical exercise and healthy diet. She also regularly took herbal supplements directed at strengthening her immune system.
My questions are:
1. I am under the impression that strain identification is impossible where the carrier is a male. Is this true? If so, why?
2. Does anyone else know of any cases where the individual’s immune system eliminated the virus?
3. My family doctor’s opinion was that the first girl’s behavior (depression, poor diet and promiscuity) likel allowed the virus to gain an advantage over her immune system. Can anyone comment on this?
Thanks,
Mike
I have known I’ve been infected with HPV for six months now. I went through the all the feelings you went through too. Before I found out I was really careless: not eating healthy, not getting enough sleep, drinking a lot, doing drugs, smoking cigarettes, all this with a history of anorexia and depression. I continued doing these things and I punished my body and myself because I was angry. Then about two months ago, I realized despite some sporadic treatment with Aldara, my warts were getting worse! I had to wake up and realize this wasn’t going away on its own. I gave up the bingeing on booze and drugs constantly and I finally quit the cigarettes a month ago! I focus on exercise, lots of rest (and relaxation), a healthy diet, and regular treatment. I already feel so much better. My advice to all you is: I know you feel like crap, lonely and hopeless, but feeling good about yourself and taking care of yourself because of that is the key to getting better with this disease. Good luck everyone.

Justin:
Can you (or anyone else) provide a link to information on the development of ‘therapeutic’ vaccines AND a cure in 10/20 years?
Work is being done on a ‘prophylactic’ (preventative) HPV vaccine, but information on a ‘therapeutic’ (treatment) vaccine would be encouraging.
Is there any information available on research to develop a reliable HPV test for men?
Has anyone had experience with alternative therapies?
HPV is a virus. HPV virus is like a cold or the chicken pox. You get it, you may develop symptoms and then your body usually fights it off and the virus becomes supressed (ex. if you have had the chicken pox, you still carry the virus, but you are no longer able to catch it or get it again). This means that you will probably no longer show any more signs of the HPV virus. But, you can still spread it to someone else that has not been exposed to it because it. In some cases, out of all the millions who have this virus, some people will not be able to fight off the virus and it can lead to or help cancer build up in the body (cervix in females). But, with close care and regular paps and/or colposcopy, females have the power to virtually never die of cervical cancer (if it was related to HPV). Condoms do not protect fully against HPV, and most continual symptons of the virus that reappear are due to reinfection (getting HPV from another person and it being a different strain of the virus). Hope that this info was helpful to anyone freaking out about something that in most cases is not a big deal. Also, warts go away after treatment and usually do not reoccur after your body fights off the virus.

I was just wondering about the emotional aspects of this disease. How can i feel better. It’s all well and good to tell me to accept and move on and roll with the punches, but i’m tired of not being able to cuddle and kiss and basically feel normal again. I’m scared to touch my friends or shake hands(i have them on my hands and in my mouth). I can’t touch kiss or anything until they are gone. I’ll tell ya, I’m feeling kinda quazimodo and i was wondering if i should wear gloves and not share cigarettes. AAAAHHHHHHH it sucks not touching anyone.
Look into cidofovir cream. It kills the virus. That doesn’t mean that it’s completely gone from your system but it does seem effective in specific locations. There are instructions on how to make it out there and any doctor can prescribe it for you.

I got hpv a year and a half ago because my boyfriend cheated on me. We broke up and I found someone else not knowing that i had it, even though i regularly got tested just to be on the safe side. I got pregnant by him and we have a 5 month old daughter together. When I got pregnant, mine went away and haven’t come back yet. His only got worse. Now we just broke up and he is threatening to tell everyone we know about it just to make sure I can’t go after any of our friends. I want to be able to move on, but, i feel so tied down to him because of this. I feel like I have to be with him just so I won’t hurt anyone else. There needs to be a dating service or something for us so we don’t have to hope that whoever we like may already have it.
