What issues should the Republicans stress in the health care summit

Obama Plans Bipartisan Summit on Health Care

Morning Joe had a nice discussion of this plan.  I agree with two of his three points.

My agenda (if anyone cares)

  1. True tort reform.  I would not go after caps, but rather focus on health courts.  Tort reform would attract several Republican votes.  Can the Democrats vote for a bill that includes tort reform?
  2. Transparent insurance competition.  We need national health insurance availability, rather than state specific health insurance.  We need understandable options and competition.  Insurance companies try to avoid transparency so that they can have huge profits.  We should decrease state defined mandates.

I would avoid the importation of pharmaceuticals issue.  We can treat so many conditions with generic drugs.  I favor targeted comparative effectiveness research on generics versus newer more expensive drugs – this will save more money than importation.

I hope that the Summit does allow both sides to listen to each other and find the "sweet spot" in the middle.  We should provide insurance for more Americans – hopefully all, but at least more.

Today I will endorse this plan with cautious optimism.
