Kudos to my resident. We had a motley assortment of routine admissions, including 2 mostly admitted for alcohol intoxication on Xmas day.
The kudos go to this presentation and decision making. Older man admitted for falling and drowsiness. He had a recent stroke, and did relatively well during a short rehab stay.
I believe my resident hit the nail straight on – he diagnosed polypharmacy
He stopped several medications, including antihypertensives. This morning we should see how he has improved.
As an academic internist, I see far too many examples of polypharmacy. I suspect I am sometimes guilty.
Medications have side effects. The more medications, the more side effects. As physicians we should prescribe prudently.
Geriatricians are wonderful at paring down medication lists. We should follow their lead.
