17 days at the VA – day 16

2009

Yesterday we spent significant time on our 8 patients.  All had issues that required thought and some required doing some reading.  We had our first opportunity to use a new drug – Methylnaltrexone for Opioid-Induced Constipation in Advanced Illness.

Our patient came in from hospice with abdominal pain and severe obstipation.  We used standard treatments with only modest success.  Adding methylnatrexone made a huge difference, allowing the patient to be ready for discharge today.
