Over the past 5 years I have embraced the role of senior statesman. I mentor many faculty members, residents and students. My favorite advice requires one sentence:
Figure out what you love and become great at it.
Still, I always keep my eyes open for helpful reading material. I have personally used the 7 habits of highly effective people and recommend it often. Today I learned about The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need. This review on Amazon explains the 6 rules contained in the book (which I now will download to my Kindle to read).
1. Don’t be rigid about planning out each step well in advance . . . it’s not possible to do.
2. Build on what you’re good at (Peter Drucker originated that one) and avoid relying on what you aren’t good at.
3. Focus on what you can do for others (start with the boss) rather than what’s in it for you (you can read more about this in How to Be a Star at Work).
4. Keep at it. Practice makes perfect.
5. Take on big challenges and learn from them.
6. Make a difference.
I love these 6 rules. I have read similar rules in other books, but this specific collection will probably make this a book that I will buy for specific mentees.
