Congress takes a vacation

I will still be working and blogging.

Bob Doherty gives his special take on their progress thus far – Congress to recess without finishing health reform (me too!)

I believe that we will get a bill. Likely no one will be totally happy with the bill, that is the art of compromise. Compromise never feels quite right.

Many rail against compromise. They know they are right in their beliefs, and thus they must not compromise. We know those people. I will list a few issues: gun control, abortion, single-payer health care. These single issue folks cannot compromise.

Some argue that compromise is immoral and a weakness. Yet our country has been built on compromise.

If we want to make progress on health care, we must accept compromise. We have too many constituencies to achieve a great bill, so I will accept a good bill.

Will the final product be good, I believe we will have some aspects of improvement that make the plan worthwhile, but we will see. Obviously, we know our blogging topic for the next several months.

For another take on reform – Two rules by which to judge a health reform bill.
