I had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday. It started making rounds at the VA hospital, seeing 7 patients. We finished at a reasonable hour, then I had time to workout (after helping my wife put the turkey into the brown n’ bag.) We had family and friends over for a wonderful meal.
As I pondered the beauty of the holiday, I thought about my good fortune. I was a good enough student to get into medical school, and then discover my passion. I have had a delightful career, and continue to spend much time teaching students and residents. I make rounds in the range of 160-180 days each year. I help many patients, some through diagnosis, some through empathy.
Medicine continues to provide wonderful intellectual and emotional rewards.
I am delighted with the enthusiasm that most medical students and residents bring to education. This generation really does have the right stuff. They often have borrowed the equivalent of a starter home just to pay for medical school. Yet I see a true love for learning with minimal cynicism.
I hope all the readers had a great Thanksgiving. I thank you for reading this blog, and for your many comments.
