Losing weight and eating yogurt

by rcentor on January 30, 2006

Due to too much travelling, too many restaurant dinners, and a variety of other personal defects, I decided a few weeks ago that I needed to lose several pounds. Fortunately, I do lose weight quickly, and have made great progress over the past 3 weeks. My weight loss diet is one that I stumbled upon years ago – and it always works. The main staple of this diet is low fat yogurt (I prefer Publix brands – excellent taste and a nice variety of flavors). I also really jack up the aerobic activity during these periods, believing that decreased calories and increased expenditures is the perfect combination for successful weight reduction.

I choose yogurt now (and in the past) because it tastes good and has plenty of vitamins. Apparently, yogurt really is a great choice. Today I performed a Google search on yogurt and diet and found these articles – Yogurt May Help Burn Fat, Promote Weight Loss and Yogurt May Help Promote Weight Loss

An isocaloric diet that incorporates yogurt promotes greater weight loss, according to the results of a 12-week trial published in the April issue of the International Journal of Obesity. The investigators speculate that the increased amount of calcium (Ca) and suppression of calcitriol make this diet more effective.

“We have previously demonstrated an antiobesity effect of dietary Ca; this is largely mediated by Ca suppression of calcitriol levels, resulting in reduced adipocyte intracellular Ca2+ and, consequently, a coordinated increase in lipid utilization and decrease in lipogenesis,” write M. B. Zemel, from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and colleagues. “Notably, dairy Ca is markedly more effective than other Ca sources.”

In this study, 34 obese subjects were placed on a balanced deficit (–500 kcal/day) diet and randomized to control (400-500 mg Ca/day; n = 16) or yogurt (1,100 mg Ca/day; n = 18) treatments for 12 weeks. Macronutrients and fiber in the diets of both groups were held constant at the U.S. average. At baseline and after 12 weeks, the investigators measured body weight, body fat and fat distribution (using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), blood pressure, and circulating lipids.

For patients on the yogurt diet, fat loss was dramatically increased (–4.437 ± 0.47 vs –2.757 ± 0.73 kg in the control group; P < .005), and lean tissue loss was reduced by 31%. Truncal fat loss was increased by 81% for patients on the yogurt diet compared with those on the control diet (P < .001), as reflected in a much greater reduction in waist circumference (–3.997 ± 0.48 cm vs –0.587 ± 1.04 cm; P < .001). Compared with the control group, the proportion of fat lost from the trunk was higher in the yogurt diet group (P < .005).

"Isocaloric substitution of yogurt for other foods significantly augments fat loss and reduces central adiposity during energy restriction," the authors write. "These data add to a growing body of observational and clinical observations that support a role for dietary calcium and dairy foods in controlling excess adiposity."

Very interesting! I must point out that the studies were supported by a yogurt selling company – thus, I am not ready to get overly excited. However, my personal observations (albeit anecdotal) certainly support the hypothesis.

I highly recommend the apple pie low fat yogurt – delicious!!!!!

When I have yogurt as a significant portion of my meal, I generally mix it with fresh fruit. I tend to think of canned or processed fruit as a sweet instead of counting toward my fruit consumption.

Bananas and plain yogurt with some cinnamon is a good start to my day.

Abby January 31, 2006 at 12:28 pm

I’ve taken to eating full-fat Greek style yogurt. The flavor is much more interesting. I treat it as a dessert with a bit of honey or preserves. Sometimes I top it off with granola when I have it for breakfast.

It is so thick that I find that I eat a *much* smaller portion and feel quite full, so I don’t think that I’m ingesting that many more calories. The package says that it has 200 calories per serving and that there are only 2.5 servings per container, but I get 4 to 5 servings out of it. There is more saturated fat in the stuff.

Hi, I stumbled upon this interesting article and it really did surprise me. I absolutely relate to the part “Due to too much travelling, too many restaurant dinners, and a variety of other personal defects, I decided a few weeks ago that I needed to lose several pounds.” So how exactly does this yogurt diet work? What’s the diet plan like? And how much is the estimated weight loss (in pounds) per week? Please help quick! Summer’s here and I’d hate to look bulgy! ;) Thanks a lot for your help :)

what is the best yogurt for dieting

PRECIOUS November 8, 2006 at 4:12 am

RECENTLY, I FOUND OUT THAT I WEIGH 174 POUNDS AND I’M ONLY 5 FEET. SO MY FRIEND TOLD ME TO TRY THE YOGURT DIET. SUPRISINGLY ENOUGH I LOST 8 POUNDS IN MY FIRST WEEK

Sara November 28, 2006 at 7:20 am

I have been eating yogurt 3 times a day for 2 months. I lost 8 lbs in the first 3 weeks and I have lost a total of 15 lbs. I eat Weight Watchers yogurt because it has the highest percent calcium. I eat it with each meal or as a snack. I barely taste it anymore, but am not tired of it. The results speak for themsleves. I’m maintaining my weight now and the yogurt truely helps.

Kristen November 29, 2006 at 4:55 pm

I love yogurt! It’s has a healthy 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein, which is optimal for health and weight control, plus numerous minerals that are essentail to life! No wonder you have all had such success with yogurt –> it truly is one of the healthiest foods. Because plain yogurt is nutritionally the best, without any added cornstarches or gelatin-bases, I usually add a little bit of maple, banana, lemon, or vanilla extract and a few drops of Stevia (a calorie-free, flower-based sweetener). It’s like a dessert, but it’s healthier than ever! A couple of servings of the stuff every day, and it’s almost inevitable that you’ll lose weight without too much difficulty. The great thing is that it’s around 88% water, and it satiates me really well, probably because it’s also very low on the glycemic index and gives one lasting energy (stable blood sugar).

Kelli February 9, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Ok…I’m doing Discovery Channel’s National Body Challenge for the past 3 weeks and haven’t lost a pound. My problem is quantity, and the yogurt sounds like a great option. Problem is, I’ve already included Dannon’s new lite n fit in my special k/total/slim fast plan. I’m also on V8 and have opted to go with all my favorite foods REDUCED FAT/CALORIE. I’m interested in controlling my hunger, because it’s a beast. I’ll let you guys know when I start to lose the weight. I’ve got a container of plain yogurt, and I’ll revamp my diet tonight (two plates of spaghetti later).

Sue Bass June 13, 2007 at 2:46 pm

I am eating regular yogurt and noticed I am gaining weight from it! So, is it recommended only to eat “low fat” yogurt? The regular yogurt is so good, though. I have been eating too much of it daily, and I noticed I have gained about ten pounds! I don’t eat anything else; no sugar or fried food, but I am gaining weight from the yogurt. Can you tell me if it’s because it is not lowfat?????

Mark Smith June 14, 2007 at 3:38 pm

I’ve been eating the store brand NON-FAT yogurt that is fat free and sweetened with Aspartame. At only 120 calories in a 8 ounce container you can’t beat the fullness after one of those for a snack or with whole wheat toast and fruit for breakfast. For me, it’s portion size control. It’s too easy for me to eat jsut to eat. So far, so good. 9 pounds in 3 weeks.

Barbara June 20, 2007 at 9:31 am

I have been changing my eating habits since I joined the gym and was too fat and had high blood pressure to boot to be trained. So yogurt is my new best friend. I have lost 22 pounds since the end of March. I eat yogurt with a little granola for fiber and an apple or banana twice a day and usually a smart dinner. I have always believed the best way to change your eating habits (they are what made us fat!) by avoiding white foods and shopping peripherally in the grocery store. Just dont go down those aisles unless it is for low fat salad dressing. The other thing is no carbonated beverages of any type. Try it, it works. I hope to have lost another 40 pounds by this time next year. Slower is better.

Brooke July 10, 2007 at 4:44 pm

Fat free yogurt is the best way to go — try Dannon’s Light Thick n Creamy. Its fat free, and only 100 calories per serving. So try eating that yogurt (and only that) for an entire day, every 2 hours. Even if you are awake for 16 hours in a day, thats still just 800 calories consumed. I tried this for just two days and lost 3 lbs. No joke. The trouble is seeing how long you can stick to it before getting sick of eating just yogurt.

BJ August 2, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I also did the yoghurt research aswell & it just seems it is a great solution for weightloss, not only that i believe it to be quite rapid aswell which is what we all want !! A couple of months ago, i decided to start a yoghurt diet only consuming Vaalia Natural low fat. I lost 2kg in the first week by the scale, dont know if it was fat or water..but atleast the scale went down. Stupid me stopped after 3 weeks of only eating yoghurt, but now because of the previous result ( & my fiance’s compliments) ive just started freshly again. Only 3 days into it but this time im not jumping on the scales until my first month. Will be back with my results !!

Belinda August 2, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Hehe yeah Brooke. But if you stick to all different flavours it couldnt be too bad.

Jim September 22, 2007 at 8:51 am

I have been doing a low carb diet with lots of salads for 3 months, and have slowly, methodically lost 1 pound per week. This past week I started eating yogurt, while keeping most everything else the same, and I suddenly lost 6 pounds.

Diana October 26, 2007 at 5:46 am

Hi everybody! I am from Moldova, but have been living and studying in Germany during the 2004 – 2006. I came to Germany with an Aupair programm and have gained a lot of weight living in a German family, eating lots of German cheese and chocolate. I am 1,75 cm tall and became 75 kg. After a month I changed the family, which had other eating habits, I would say healthy habits. With plain yogurt to breakfast, small food portions to lunch and grated apple + plane yogurt for dinner, without though thinking of making a diet, I lost 10 kg in 4 months. After I went out of the family I started eating my favorite food, plenty of plane 0,1 % or 1,5% fat plain yogurt with grated apples or mango or banana and I reached 52 kg, but also with jogging each 3rd day and walking a lot every day. Unfortunately I fell ill of a phsychic desease after a failed love story and I had to turn back to my country and leave university and my lifestyle in Germany. Because of the medicines that I have taken, because of no sports and reach in carbs food, I gained a lot of weight in the last half of a year and have 90 kg now. But fortunately I got to know a guy from Portugal per internet. We are going to marry at the beginning of the next month and I will move to Portugal, where I will restart my diet with plain non low fat yougurt and fruits and vegetables, such as brokolli. I will also go to the gym and I am sure that I will lose 5 kg per month, wishing to lose 35 kg in 7 months. I will restart jogging when I will lose my first 10 kg. Wish good luck to anybody! BELIEVE IN THE MAGIC OF PLAIN LOW FAT YOGURT.

gary March 4, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Dianna,

You’ve shared alot if intimate information about yourself, that you met some man on the internet and are going to marry him, just recently in the last year left another relationship, became depressed from the relationship ending and your weight gain and loss is up and down. Do you think you are stable enough to embark on a relationship with someone you met on the internet? Sure eating yogurt will help you lose weight, but the other stuff you talked about is really a big concern. Maybe you should focus on finishing your education, becoming stable with your health and weight and move more slowly into the next relationship. Just a thought.

Lean Jeans March 6, 2008 at 2:31 pm

You guys that are eating yogurt with aspartame are really doing yourself a disservice because you should read about the number of people who say they are hungrier and have gained weight from using it. The artificial sweetners need to be left alone.

With a brand like Dannon or Yoplait, read the label. I was really shocked a few months ago when I saw that the Yoplait has high fructose corn syrup in it. I hadn’t eat any in several years and it tasted extremely sweet to me. That’s something else to add to the list of potential weight gainers.

My preference is the strained Greek yogurt Fage, the 0% fat kind. The others are too rich for me because even the no-fat yogurt is extremely rich. To me, it’s like eating cream. For a little sweetner, I just add some honey which is delicious together.

I started with the Fage after I’d had the flu for about 3 days. I rested and felt very weak. After about a week later of eating the yogurt nightly, I felt utterly rejuvenated.

As far as weight loss, I was really surprised after about 1 month how small my waistline was and that my pants/jeans had gotten baggy. I was not trying to lose weight and the yogurt w/honey was the only change. Generally, I eat very nutritiously and I get a moderate amount of exercise, nothing excessive.

There is definitely something to the yogurt increasing your internal fat-burning mechanism. Frankly, I don’t think it’s just the calcium either.

Hi Jared!

I am hooked on the Greek FAGE~ Its consistency rocks! I eat the 2% only 4 grams of fat because omitting fat completely is not good and doesn’t work long haul- and the 0% tastes gross! I started laughing because I cut up a ripe banana into the yoguurt and it was delicious.

Will have to try with the cinnamon.
Tip*

If you really like something sweet without the guilt
Try the FAGE~ yogurt and mix 1-2 Tblsp of Sugar free maple syrup and sprinkle cinnamon I cannot even begin to tell you how good this combo tastes, but sometimes I just love the taste of this yogurt!

Thanks
Tania~

Blake March 31, 2008 at 12:59 pm

hey! great article. i’m actually doing this right now sticking to a 200 calorie a day diet. so far i’ve lost 40 pounds just by eating two servings of yogurt a day with the twice weekly oatmeal breakfasts. that’s with barely any exercise due to my work schedule. i’m always out the door heading to work or running errands in between which leads to a lot of food stops to break the monotony. i decided to suffer through a regimen like this but i’m sort of liking it! i’m not craving food as bad because my carb intake is almost zero (which is what makes you hungry all the time apparently). when i find time to exercise, i’ll eat a serving of oatmeal to keep my mind and body going. when i’m unable to regularly exercise, the two servings of yogurt a day works wonders. i’ve got about 60 pounds to go before i’m at my target. i’m not that huge of a whale if you’re wondering lol. hopefully i’ll get there safely and soon!

Usha April 30, 2008 at 1:17 pm

I’ve embarked the family recently on healthier eating. Just a little readjustment for my husband to lose about 4 kg and me about 20 kg. We live in India and it’s the middle of an incredibly hot summer (April-May); so I’ve been making extra yogurt lately and wanted to put in my 2 cents. It’s too early to say yet if it’s working (my kid tends to eat most of the yogurt!), and after reading all this, I’ve to increase my portion too. But an important note I would make for residents of the US (I’ve lived there nearly 2 decades) is to be aware that store-bought yogurts always add sweeteners, sugar or artificial sweetener (not good for you). You can easily make your own plain yogurt (it’s done in nearly every Indian household). All you do is warm about 2 cups of milk till hot (not hot enough to burn your finger); and stir in a spoon of PLAIN yogurt. Cover and leave out in a warm, draft-free place in your kitchen overnight, and next morning…presto, yogurt. I go a step further and strain the yogurt for a few hours through an extremely fine mesh sieve to remove the whey, and get wonderful Greek-style yogurt. You can combine this in a blender with a little honey, or fruit (lately I’ve been using superlative mangoes which are in season), and you get a rich, mousse-like yogurt that’s positively addictive. If the strained yogurt is too thick to blend, add a bit of unstrained yogurt or some milk. It’s really easy and you know there’s no hidden sugar.

Sara May 13, 2008 at 9:03 am

I used to live off of Fage yogurt-it kept me going when I worked long days in a restaurant. Now I work in an office and have gained about 15 pounds in a year! I know it’s partially due to less movement throughout the day, but I am also wondering how my eating got so off tract. I bought a week’s supply of Fage last night and I am going to eat it for breakfast and lunch. Is it ok to buy the kind that comes with fruit you mix in?

kristi June 11, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Yea yogurt does work! at least it worked for me, i weighted 150 lbs in the 9th grade and i went on a diet during the summer and lost it all and went down to a size 3(i was a size 13) and it all happend in 3 months. I probably didnt go about it the heathliest way but Im happy i did it. I do not recommend doing what i did to lose the weight. (cuz i just ate yogurt)

Di June 13, 2008 at 8:57 am

Usha is so right. Make your own yogurt. It is easy to make and sooooo delicious. I use UHT organic skim milk (it is pre-sterilised, otherwise heat milk to almost boiling then cool for half an hour). I use the oven barely on to keep it warm overnight, and in the morning you will have thick, creamy yogurt to use in your cooking, breakfast cereal, as cream or icecream, or as Usha says, to make a delicious, tasty low fat cheese.

One of the very best ways to have yogurt is to blend it in your blender with frozen fruit (berries or mango etc) and a banana – it turns into the most wonderful icecream ever. Try it and be amazed.

mimi June 19, 2008 at 2:41 pm

‘la yogurt’ is great– only 90 calories! i think the strawberry probiotic is tasty. i like this diet the best so far because im not starving and im not grumpy. i dont feel like anythings sitting in my stomache after i eat and its truley encouraging. i lost 5 pounds first week :D try it!

Oldpilot August 26, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Someone mentioned yogurt “with the fruit that you add”. I suspect that means the Dannon cup with the fruit at the bottom, which you can stir up to mix. Really, this is just sugar! I’d stay away from it.

My invariable lunch is non-fat, sugar-free yogurt with oatmeal (dry) and cut-up fruit. I’m not on a diet. I just like the stuff.

Dan September 18, 2008 at 5:01 am

I usually eat yogurt with rice cakes. Very high on protein and gives a lot of energy! :D

VICKI November 9, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Isnt all the bacteria thats added to yogurt really bad for you if you eat just yogurt??

Jack November 30, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Yogurt is a good way to lose a few lbs. but like a lot of things after a while it starts getting a bit tiresome. But it’s a great way to lose weight quickly.

Kevin January 7, 2009 at 12:15 am

I am a 42 yr old male, 6’1″, with average/medium build. For the past 12 years, I have worked in IT (computers) and enjoyed a fairly sedentary lifestyle. My primary exercise was (and still is) “fair-weather” golf!

From mid-late teens up to about 30, I weighed around 170-175. But from around 30 to my current age, I have crept to 200-205 pounds. I finally decided I need to lose weight, so I begin eating low-fat 80 calorie yogurt for breakfast, lunch and (very occasionally) as an evening snack. I would eat a “normal supper”.

I also converted to all diet sodas…I know the sodas were a HUGE source of empty calories.

I also begin walking on a treadmill…nothing strenuous, but I would walk at a 4-5 mph pace for 30-45 minutes 2-4 times a week.

I knew I was eating less calories and the treadmill was providing more exercise than I had been used to. I weighed myself everyday – even though it was against everyone’s advice, but for me, it was a motivator to see my progress or regression.

I didn’t really follow any prescribed diet, fad, or trend. It was just something I “come up with”.

In a little less than 5 months, here are the results >>>>
Aug 18, 2008 – I weighed 204 and wore size 36 (tight) pants
Jan 6, 2009 – I weigh 175 and wear size 33 (loose) pants
I have lost 29 pounds and 3-4 inches in my waist!!!!!

The best part (so far), is that it has been easy enough to stay with my plan. My goal is to keep my weight between 170 and 175.

I have never had a weight problem, so this was my “first diet”. I can’t say whether yogurt really contributed or not – but I don’t really care because my diet plan has worked for me. But I will say this…I always have a stock pile of yogurt in the refrigerator!

eve February 18, 2009 at 5:04 pm

how did you do it ? you ate yougurt before each meal? three times a day? please reply.thanks!

Nora April 8, 2009 at 10:02 am

This is a very late reply but I just stumbled upon this site. Could you please tell me what you did exactly to lose 5 pounds the first week? Just yogurt? I mean, 5 pounds — that’s a lot in one week and not too dangerous a rate! I’d really appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks a lot!

Darlene May 9, 2009 at 5:25 am

just wonder which yogurt? how many per day? cos im trying work out if its proof!!! cos i need diets….

Tina September 11, 2009 at 10:14 am

The often neglected part for a balanced diet is the fibre intake. We see the hype about importance of vitamins, proteins and other nutrients but fibre is often less talked about. The truth is that our body needs a good proportion of fibre in our diets for optimum functioning and leading a healthy life.

health.com December 13, 2009 at 12:20 am

New research from scientists at Washington University might offer more reason to jump on the yogurt bandwagon. According to a study just published in the journal "Science Translational Medicine", there could be a link between the amount of bacteria in your stomach and the amount of fat you carry around your middle.

TeachRoss April 5, 2010 at 11:09 pm

hello. i just started to eat yogurt today. On my desk is mixed fruit yogurt. Do you think it would fit a lunch meal. just that…

I don’t want to gain weight, but I want to know if a flavored yogurt would be healthy.

Thanks

st86 July 3, 2010 at 2:00 am

Hi TeachRoss.  I dont know if you're reading this as its been a couple months since you posted but any type of yogurt flavor would suffice.  I have been on a diet now for 3 weeks and coupled with exercise and not eating as much, I've incorporated Yoplait Light Yogurt three times per day.  The new flavors they've come out with are fantastic.  My favorites are Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, Boston Creme Pie, Very Vanilla, Apple Turnover and Orange Creme.  These are wonderful flavors and all carry either 100 or 110 calories and are no fat.  Any kind of the Yoplait Light Yogurts would work fine!  I am 5'7 and weighed 244 lbs when I started my trek, as of today I am now 232 lbs… 12 lbs in that amount of time is pretty good considering my activity and eating habits were completely out of whack.

Marie July 30, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Hi,
I have been eating yogurt twice a day for the last 4 weeks and have lost 8 lbs. I usually eat a salad for lunch and a normal dinner (but lately I cannot eat as much as I feel full). I started with the quart size Vanilla flavored yogurt, then went to organic Vanilla and now am on Greek style plain. To all of these kinds I have been adding my own fruit (mostly blueberries, but also rasberries and strawberries) and sometimes granola. I do add a packet of splenda and some honey to the plain to sweeten it up. I have been telling everyone I know, eat about 2 cups of yogurt a day and the weight really does come off. BUT……do not eat the presweetened stuff like yoplait or dannon, it has too much added sugar. Buy the Plain and add your own sweetener.

Laurie Bullard August 8, 2010 at 10:36 am

I went loking to see if I was eating too much yogurt and found this website.  I've basically been iving on yougurt, salads,  and fresh fruit  (HOMEMADE, as of  days 4 ago)    I've gone thru 2 yogurt makers over the years.  Eating yogurt all day  can get very expensive which is one reason to get a yogurt maker, the other is the TASTE! and there's no additives.  I urge eeeryone to get one.  Overstock .com is a good place 2.95 shipping, discounts and plenty of models. An yes, I lost 6 pounds this week and never feel hungry!  The flavors are limitless and it's delicous plain.
