We had 2 patients with tetanus in our housestaff program a couple of years ago. Both were older and had exposures which made tetanus likely. These patients recovered after extremely prolonged hospitalizations.
Tetanus is generally preventable. We should remember to vaccinate older patients.
Thanks to the widespread use of a vaccine against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus in infants and small children starting about 1950, most adults in this country retain at least some immunity to the deadly bacteria that cause tetanus, commonly known as lockjaw.
But – and this is a big but – the early established immunity can wear off with time unless booster shots are periodically given, and an unknown number of Americans over 60 have no protection because they never received these immunizations as children. As a result, older adults account for some 70 percent of the reported cases of tetanus infections.
I am a 63 year old woman who recently tranferred to a new doctor and the first thing he did was give me a tetanus shot. Now, I’m impressed and will tell him so when I see him next month. LOL
