A proposal to fund stem cell research

by rcentor on August 27, 2004

Powerful players lead stem-cell effort in Calif.

Silicon Valley tycoons, Nobel laureates and Hollywood celebrities are backing a measure on California’s Nov. 2 ballot to devote $3 billion to human embryonic stem cell experiments in what would be the biggest-ever state-supported scientific research program in the country.

The measure – designed to get around the Bush administration’s restrictions on the funding of such research – would put California at the very forefront of the field. It would dwarf all current stem cell projects in the United States, whether privately or publicly financed.

Proposition 71 promises to be one of the most contentious election issues in California, pitting scientists, sympathetic patients who could benefit from stem cells and biotechnology interests against the Roman Catholic Church and conservatives opposed to the research because it involves destroying days-old embryos and cloning.

This vote will help us understand popular opinion on this issue.

Does Tulane University have the largest funding now for all stem cell research?

Maybe I’m not keeping up.

The way I understand it, stem cell research is not illegal in the USA, it’s just that the Federal government will not fund it. Private funding is perfectly legal.

Do I understand correctly?

There is public (gov’t) funding for adult stem cell research, and a ban (if you will) on public funding for embryonic stem cell research.

The whole issue has become widely politicized, with many people claiming there is a a ban on stem cell research and cures for Alzheimers are 3 years down the road.

In actuality, there is public funding for adult stem cell research (for the first time actually). Embryonic stem cell research is pursued under private funding. To dispel another myth: there is no purported cure for Alzheimers via stem cells. Many researchers acknowledge this. To give some hope for the situation though, there have been considerable progresses in finding cures for multiple sclerosis among other diseases.

Much of the political uproar seems to be coming from people who would like to harness the therapeutic powers of embryonic stem cells, but do not want to invest the money in understanding ESC. By getting public funding, the public pays for the initial costly reasearch. The initial research will not produce any cures, just help us understand the ESC. A good analogy would be the human genome project to genetic engineering. Private investors would rather have the public pay for the costly discovery process of understanding the genome, and use that information to research cures.

ESC reminds me in a way of the hype accompanying the many golden promises of genetic engineering when this was launched over a decade ago. Some ordinary achievements, but nothing spectacular.

One reason I believe there is so much polarization about stem cell research is the public discourse has been taken over by politicians and hacks like Ron Reagan, Jr.

In this debate, we need to be more sober and cool down our expectations. California used to be known as the bellwether of what Americans think about important public issues, but that reputation has been tarred by that kooky thinking from Hollywood.

This will probably pass, though I’m not sure it’s going to be embraced by the rest of the country.
