The Portuguese and Dutch police have figured this out. Stoned soccer fans are not dangerous to each other. Druck soccer fans are. Rangel beat me to posting this story – Novel idea in crowd control
The original article (link at Rangel’s site) has this quotation:
England fans will be allowed to smoke dope before Sunday’s crunch clash with France – to keep them calm.
Cops in Lisbon plan to crack down on drunk supporters while turning a blind eye to those spotted puffing on a spliff.
Pot-smoking fans have been assured they will not be arrested, cautioned – or even have their drugs confiscated.
Last night experts said the Portuguese police’s “Here We Blow” policy would reduce chances of a punch-up between rival fans.
Alan Buffry of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance said: “If people are drinking they lose control, if they smoke cannabis they don’t.
“Alcohol makes fans fight. But cannabis smokers will be shaking hands and singing along together.”
Dutch police used a similar policy in Euro 2000 and England’s hooligan element were too stoned to fight.
A Lisbon police spokeswoman said: “If people cause a problem through drugs and become a menace then police will take action. But when this doesn’t happen why should the police be the ones making the fuss?”
So why is marijuana illegal?

Crowd Control
There might be a lesson or two hidden here:ENGLAND fans will be allowed to smoke dope before Sunday’s crunch clash with France — to keep them calm. Cops in Lisbon plan to crack down on drunk supporters while turning a blind eye to those spotted puffing…

Double standards, eh?
I admire anybody who can spot who are “drunk” and those who are “stoned.”
I have admitted patients from the ER quite high on dope,
and quite stoned (sometimes stuporous) from alcohol.
Among thousands of rowdy fans, who get high with their DNA-encoded chauvinism, that would be a mighty difficult job separting the chaff from the chaff.

this actually worked at the 2000 championships. For the game in Holland the England fans were peaceful. When they went over the border to Belgium for hte next game, there was no dope but strong booze….and yes the English hordes smashed the place up!

The war on medical marijuana and the War on Drugs in general is the most devistating social policy in North America today. Get involved with the social justice journalism revolution and get involved with our film festival! Peace. George Bailey
The 3rd Annual Drug War Vigil Film Festival
by press release (10 Sept, 2004)
This year’s event will be in a Vancouver theatre
The Drug War Vigil Memorial Group is a social justice think tank that was founded in the fall of 2000, dedicated to ending the War on Drugs.
We recognize that the militarization of this medical issue and the criminalization of the chronically sick, terminally ill and chemically dependent have resulted in the needless loss of human life, and that this is the true crime.
We promoted social justice journalism at the 2002 Cannabis Culture Toker’s Bowl Drug War Vigil Film Festival and again at the 2nd Annual Drug War Vigil Film Festival in May 2003, also during the Bowl. With spin-offs when 911 Media (www.911media.org) Washington State’s premier Media Arts Center and the BC Compassion Club Society (www.thecompassionclub.org), a non-profit healthcare provider distributing cannabis and other holistic medicines, presented a DRUG WAR FILM FESTIVAL March 12 th in Seattle Wa. in addition to an earlier show here in East Vancouver.
This Year we using a theater Venue and staging it as separate event from the Toker’s Bowl so broader spectrum of participants will be able to view.
Our group is honored to be affiliated with this event and thank Marc Emery and Chris Bennett, and crew of Pot-TV for their extraordinary activism in action in sponsoring this event.

While the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, can be manufactured in a pill available by prescription to treat nausea and vomiting associated with certain cancer treatments, scientists say that more research needs to be done on its side effects and other potential medical uses

Marijuana use can transiently impair short-term memory, and like alcohol use, may increase noncompliance with AEDs. Marijuana use or withdrawal could potentially trigger seizures in susceptible patients.

What a brilliant idea, I am so happy to hear this! I am constanyly baffled as to why marijuana is ignored at virtually all concerts and musical festivals. Yet, when trying to light up a joint at a ballgame, you will find yourself quickly escorted out (minus the dope
