A poorly thought op-ed by Maureen Dowd

by rcentor on January 15, 2004

Medpundit addressed this issue yesterday – Defending Dean. Today Maureen Dowd attacks Dean’s wife because she continues to practice rather than campaign with her husband. The Doctor Is Out

The NY Times (who ran an article yesterday and the op-ed today) and their ilk apparently do not understand. Medicine is an important profession. Many who choose medicine feel that what we do transends politics. Dean’s wife – Dr. Judith Steinberg Dean – practices medicine. She is apparently dedicated to her chosen profession.

Why would anyone expect her to sublimate her career for her husband’s? Working with many medical couples in training, I see separate physicians, each working on their chosen avocation.

Why should his aspirations impact her career? What do I not understand?

Bravo to Dr. Judith Steinberg Dean! She likes seeing patients – so that is what she will continue to do. The heck with this political stuff.

BTW, this does not change my opinion of Dean. Nor should it.

Has Dowd gone off the deep end? Her article seems like it came straight out of the 1950s! The idea that Judy Steinberg needs to campaign with her husband in order to warm up his image is a poor excuse for her to humm the tune to “stand by your man”.

Is Dowd married? If so I hope her husband runs for office so that she will have to go campaign at his side and she will have to quit her job writing stupid op-ed articles!

She certainly does not need to, is not required to, and should not be expected to campaign with him. I vote (or don’t) for the candidate, not the smart spouse, cute kids, or well trained dog.

God, I am so sick of woman-on-woman sexism. I mean, Dowd has a bully pulpit in the effing New York Times, and she uses it to talk about shag carpet and make catty remarks about how a candidate’s wife dresses? She should be fired for such laziness. I wrote an entry about it here: http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/2004_01_01_nixon_archives.html#107416983053429008

I too was disappointed in the article. I would respect a candidate’s wife of any professional background if she wished not to become a campaign accessory. As a primary care doctor, however, it struck me as particularly sad to consider Dowd’s assumption that patients across Vermont should have to lose their primary care provider in the name of creating good appearances.

MO should spend more time observing the DANGERS of SATAN inspired role models like
BRITNEY SPEARS. Not a word from women on
this DANGEROUS force on young FEMALES.
Dr. Steinberg is Howard Deans wife inspite of any decision he makes politically.
Its NO surprise Ms. Dowd would have such thoughts, what would expect
from a WOMAN that wears BRIGHT RED LIPSTICK

When I read her screed I thought, “Ms. Dowd obviously feels threatened by someone like Dr. Steinberg, an accomplished professional woman who doesn’t play to the vanities of lazy, self-important would-be opinion makers.”

This was only reinforced when I read today’s followup whine, in which she fulminates because Dr. Steinberg’s husband, who–in case she hadn’t noticed, is locked in a four-way tie in Iowa–evidently failed to connect with her for a planned phone interview. She called Matt Drudge and vented about it. (Gee, I wonder if her trashing Dean’s wife’s personal life, marriage and career decisions might have had anything to do with it?)

This isn’t really about the Deans. It’s about Maureen Dowd’s massive ego.

I sent her a fan letter.

Maureen Dowd is a disgrace generally, on a newspaper that is rapidly becoming a laughingstock.

If it were a woman running for President and her husband refused to campaign for her – do you think that decision would be applauded?
