Previous Entry | Main | Next Entry OTC Prilosec - one step closer As indicated last month, we will probably soon have our first over the counter proton pump inhibitor - FDA gives conditional OK to nonprescription Prilosec
I have mixed feelings about this announcement. The financial implications are probably very positive. History suggests that patients will pay less for an OTC drug. However, I do worry about patients figuring out when to come in for evaluations - especially with chronic gastroesophageal reflux. Posted byComments: A problem indeed. One of my uncles was told as a teenager that his TB was terminal. He fought that opinion and won, but it left him with a severe distrust of the medical profession. Years later, he occasionally suffered gastric distress, and used over-the-counter medication (ie antacids). When this was one or two tablets a week, OK maybe, but he got into the habit; when he was taking a bottle of liquid antacid per day, he certainly should have seen a doctor - but did not.
