Growing older, I'll drink to that

Alcohol 'only benefits old' - according to a British study, one can (and perhaps should) drink more as one gets older.

Previous studies have suggested that moderate consumption of alcohol can protect against heart disease.

But this latest study suggests that any benefits only apply if people drink later in life.

""A normal sized glass of wine or half a pint [roughly one normal drinking glass- JA] of regular strength beer contains one unit."

rant -

This, after two pages of referencing "units". In a newspaper! Why not at the top, so we would have some referents as we read? I suppose we should be grateful there was an explanation at all, so we do not think of "unit" as "fifth" or "six-pack".

Bad enough this sort of thing occurs in professional journals, but popular press should know better than to just copy technical jargon.

end rant

======================

Well, at a mere 57 I suppose I'll just have to wait a few years before joining my 87-year-old mother in a weekly glass or two.
